The Heavenly Pentagrams, Mastering the Elements and
The Pentagram of Venus

Bonnie Orgren

This is being written on the day of the first pentagram or quintile pattern in the heavens as noted by astrologers Jill Whitman and Johnny Mirehiel.  On October 27, 2004 at the Taurus Lunar Eclipse another pentagram will be formed.  Together these patterns of energies bring another Harmonic Concordance, according to Mirehiel.  He is responsible for bringing the first Harmonic Concordance to world attention last year.  That planetary pattern was a six pointed star in the heavens and it formed a tetrahedron, symbolic of unity, the unity of matter and spirit, personality and soul.  The planetary configuration included Chiron, the asteroid signifying the wounded healer.  It could be seen as symbolizing the desire to serve the evolution our souls and that of humanity or our Christ consciousness.   October's configurations deepen that goal.

The quintile is an astrological aspect or mathematical relationship that carries strong creative energies.  Author and astrologer Robert Hand, has said this aspect relates to forces that combine to bring fundamental change or metamorphosis.  If these forces are blocked, they may be destructive.  It appears that they are impeded in the world at the current time!  Authors and astrologers, Frances Sakoian and Louis Acker, who have taught a generation of astrologers, say that the pentagram is a symbol of humanity's will and mastery over the four elements, earth, air, water and fire. It relates to talents in the use of communication and ideas to further professional goals. It brings the energy to synthesize information to help us reach goals in general.  Humanity has made the committment to align with its divine nature and aims.  This is a lofty goal. You may be asking how do we master the elements and align with these ambitions?

What does mastering the elements mean?  It means facing fears, integrating opposing energies and using these energies positively.  The elements are "stepped down" energies emanating from the Divine Source.  They are significant for many cultures of the world and are represented in myth, art and ritual. Elements are the basic energies of astrology.  Each sign represents a mode of  _expression of earth, air, water or fire.  The planets are focalizing energies,  the signs are our attitude toward them.   All the elements are contained within our bodies.  While we contain all the elements, we are more strongly attuned to three primary elements, described in our charts by the signs of our ascendant, our moon and sun.  They may be the same element or different elements, compatible or incompatible. They are our basic attunement to life.  We need to honor our attunement and integrate the other elements in our natal chart.

Earth is our home, our ground, our being.  It is feminine and receptive to the other elements. If we value the earth element, we build a foundation that is stable, practical and worth preserving. Air needs to circulate, communicate and have a focus for the _expression of its ideas.  Air dreams and can "dream" things into reality. Water needs to feel deeply a full range of feelings and to empathize with the feelings and moods of others, too.  It is a fluid and has to find a container or it "floods". Fire is enthusiastic, spontaneous, inspired and self-motivated. Fire needs to assert itself and expand its area of influence. The elements work in unison and need to be in balance to create harmony.  Water makes the earth fertile, air feeds fire.  Our feelings are in the water element and guide us in preserving ourselves, our bodies and our creations.  But an  excess of water can destabilize the earth.  Too much emphasise on earthly practicality and stability can parch the feeling element and supress life.  Water may fear pollution by earth.  The air element needs to communicate with the environment to express  itself  and exert influence.  Too much fire consumes all the air.  Water can put out fire if used excessively.  In the right proportion it makes steam or power.  Fire can warm the earth ,bring fruition and destroy debris.   In excess, it can parch earth or make it barren. Too much earth can tamp out fire. Air helps the earth to breath and is the source of prana, or life energy.  Ideas can help to bring stability and communication can create mental structures.  Too much air erodes the earth and destroys it.   Earth may fear this erosion.  Air may fear being saturated by water, consumed by fire.  However, if we honor our primary function and needs, we can utilize all the elements.  We diminish fear and can be in harmony and balance within ourselves.  This will be reflected in our outer experience and the world.  We will be emboding Chiron and fulfilling a divine mission.

How do we align with the planetary will?  The planet Venus is our guide for this part of the process.  Venus is the alter ego of the Earth.  Her  eclipse of the Sun on June 8, 2004 symbolized our desire to make this alignment, to own our divine essence.  Venus is the lens for the emergence of Divine Love through the focused Will of the Divine Mind.  She links mind with intuition, personality with Soul.  She assists in the resolution of duality. She nurtures harmony, diplomacy, blends polarities and differences.  We must embody her  essence by embracing all of ourselves and all we have created and experienced in our growth process with total acceptance and compassion.   If we do not , our self-judgment separates us from the Love and Creativity from which we emanated. Venus is the symbol of the assistance we are giving ourselves.

The journey of the planet Venus in the sky, appearing as Evening Star, Hesporos, then disappearing and reappearing as Morning Star has ancient cultural significance.  Much has already been written about her appearance as a twin star, earth's alter ego.  As Evening Star, she mates with the Earth, disappears from view, "sacrificed" to the Sun.  About 50 days later, she reappears, or is reborn, as the Morning Star, Phosphoros.  Her heliacal rise as as Morning Star occurs only when she is in retrograde motion, appearing to be moving away from Earth. After about 9 months, she disappears again for about 50-60 days and reappears as the Evening Star.  The entire cycle takes about 584 days.  In about 8 years or 5 cycles, Venus's movement draws a pentagram in the sky.  The pentagram contains the four elements, one appearing twice.  All the significance of the quintile and pentagram pertain to this cycle as well.  According to astrologer and teacher, Erin Sullivan, Venus creates a mandala with Earth as the center.  She says that in Egyptian hieroglyphics, the pentagram formed part of the word groups meaning 'to teach', 'to bring up' as in rearing a child and the 'teacher'.  What is the lesson that Venus is now teaching?

When the planets Mercury and Venus retrograde, they complete unfinished business from the last retrograde cycle.  Mercury retrogrades four or five times in the same element before a shift occurs.  Mercury will move from the Earth element into Fire Dec. 1, 2004 and remain in Fire until Nov. 2005 when it moves into Water. However, unlike Mercury Venus doesn't retrograde in the same element each time in her 8 year synodic cycle.  Her cycles show a spiralaic pattern of evolution.  She retrogrades 3 times in same element in her long pentagonal  cycle,  but each retrograde is in a different element, making at the end of the long cycle, 3 retrogrades occurring in each element.  There are 5 points to the pentagram. In her cyclic movement in the synodic cycle, two points of the star are in the same element.  In 1984,  the elements were Aries fire, Scorpio water, Gemini air and Aquarius air. In 1990, they shifted into Aries fire, Capricorn earth, Scorpio water, Leo fire and Gemini air.  This same pattern continues until 2026 when the air element of Libra replaces the water element of Scorpio.  On the level of personality, Libra is ruled by Venus.  On the Soul level, Libra is ruled by Uranus, also ruler of Aquarius.  Will this really signal a time of more social balance and beauty?  Will it lead us to the true astrological Age of Aquarius, thought by many astrologers to begin in 2060?

According to Alice Bailey, the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, said in the years, 1926-2026, there will be a "push" by the Planetary Hierarchy to assist us in learning the laws of thought to master the mental plane and to bring about a realization of the nature of the Soul.  We are to learn to further develop the ability to concentrate, to be more receptive to intuition and to envision ourselves as Divine co-creators.  He said that we are to release desire, to develop "gentle stillness".  Pain and unhappiness come from our rebellion against what "is" in the present moment.  Acceptance of each moment and ourselves frees us to perfect our gifts to humanity, to be the lens through which the Divine is focused and to experience bliss and contentment. Yes, it is an attainable goal in the present moment!
We are currently working with the Gemini energy of Venus's June 2004 retrograde and completing the lessons of her prior retrograde in Scorpio in 2002.  Scorpio is the sign of the disciple, where the goal to raise consciousness and go through the many tests of this committement is willingly established.  Water cleanses and purifies by dissolving any impediments in its path.  That was humanity's goal and committment in 2002.  The recent retrograde of Venus and eclipse of the Sun occured in the air sign of Gemini.  Gemini is the builder of the Rainbow Bridge,  the Antahkarana of esoteric literature.  This bridge is a link between personal will and the will of the Soul, between the emotional body and intuition, water and air.  It is built on the mental plane by the heart.  It is the uniting of heart and mind, fire and air.  Our love of ourselves increases, we love and appreciate our bodies more,  water, fire and earth.  Our minds open to ever expanding views of ourselves, others and the world.  Our intuitive abilities increase.  This doesn't occur through struggle.  The Earth Mother creates the desire, opens the channels and the energy of cleansing and elevation occurs.  Our only job is to set the intention, to focus our desire which is the fire element.

Lets go back to the unfinished business we need to attend to now.  It is Scorpio business and Scorpio asks for a deeper commitment to the path of embracing our buried fears and darkest places.  While the quintile aspect brings assistance, there are also challenges in the coming Lunar Eclipse in Taurus.  Venus is at a critical degree in the Eclipse chart, 29 degrees of Virgo.  This degree asks that we complete the unfinished work of both Venus and Virgo.  Virgo has a spiralaic pattern of energy movement. It is in the element of earth.  Here we need to build a stable foundation, to focus on the present NOW, the reality of our lives and the world.  Stephen Arroyo, M.A., in writing about the elements, says that Virgo directs its energy downward and is connected with past crisis in the development of personality.  It seems to me that Venus in Virgo wants to create more harmony on the mental plane.  She wants to release judgment and replace it with discrimination.  She embodies endurance and the strength to accept all of ourselves and our chosen journey.  She creates what esoterics call Right Human Relationship.  We are in right relationship when we do not judge ourselves; when we identify what we need to address in order to be more loving and open.  Virgo wants to bring out into the world the beauty of itself, the grace of its divine nature.  Isis must drop her veil of illusion and emerge as the goddess.  In Virgo this would be the goddess, Ceres.

Ceres is the Earth Mother whose daughter [what we have created], Persephone, was abducted by Pluto [ power of destruction and regeneration] and taken to Hades [the underworld, the hidden and disowned].  Allegorically, all the parts of this myth are contained within us.  Ceres so grieved for the loss of her daughter that the world became barren; the fire element, the drive and spirit were lacking.  Pluto [ regenerative soul power] restored Persephone for half of the year and the world was fertile again; water, the feeling element and heart fire bring fruition and  unite the dark and the light.  Ceres in Virgo wants to master skills and self-worth and perfect service to the world.  The Sabian symbol for 29 degrees Virgo is a seeker after occult knowledge reading an ancient scroll which illumines {his/her} mind.  Dane Rudhyar says that it presents a technique to "reach the other shore".  What could be more beautiful than the synchronization and harmony of the universe and its signs?

Venus will retrograde again in 2006 in the earth sign of Capricorn.  Capricorn is the sign of initiation, where a disciple becomes a conscious co-creator willing to serve the collective purpose of humanity.  Capricorn is a ruler, a leader. It represents mastery of the self. Let us hope that we achieve that goal and can consciously co-create a more loving, accepting world.

Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable.  Brenda Uleland
