The Mercury
– Uranus Connection By now you may well imagine that I have spent quite some time studying the astrology of the Harmonic Concordance chart. In the four years that it has lived inside me, I have come to understand that it comprises a sacred teaching, equal to any, about who we are and what we destined to become. To begin with, by the very nature of the grand sextile pattern which it sports, the complexity of this chart is far greater that almost any other imaginable. This is true because so many planets are connected by major aspects to so many other planets. In as much as the planets each represent distinct elements of ourselves, and since those elements interact so prolifically in the Concordance chart, the planetary picture that emerges from it is as complex and complete a picture of perfected Man as may ever be found in any lexicon. One of the more significant characteristics of this enlightened Being is almost certainly His/Her capacity to receive, interpret and translate the “broadcasts” of the Greater Consciousness that stands behind all of Creation. Astrologically, to a large extent, this is the function of the interplay between Mercury and Uranus. Each planet, mathematical point or sub-planet object in any chart can be said to have a “condition,” or functional strength with which it acts out its role. This is no less true for Mercury and Uranus in the Concordance chart. It is our contention that their strengths and position outside the Concordance Star, expand upon, compliment and enhance its message. Mercury is traditionally associated with all forms of communication, analysis and perceptual understanding in the mundane sphere. When functioning at its best, as in the Harmonic Concordance chart, it is stimulating, candid, open, and a clear voice of the expressive and creative flow of ideation. Robert Wilkinson[1] refers to its androgynous energy, as the Magician who knows the hidden forces in Nature and matter. To the Egyptians Mercury represented, among other things, the astrologer. This connection to the astrologer is particularly relevant to the Concordance Mercury because of its connection to Uranus and Chiron, the other two planets commonly associated with astrology. More on this later. A Special MercuryIn the Harmonic Concordance chart, Mercury is posited in very intense Scorpio where it has a tendency to delve into the core of matters. It likes to get to the root of the root of things. At 24° 59’ of the Concordance Scorpio, however, it has a most unique distinction: during the course of the Concordance Eclipse it actually changes degree – to 25° 00’. The planet of duality does it again! Therefore,
although not necessarily standard practice, I submit that the
circumstances of the Moment warrant the application of both degrees
in any examination of Mercury’s condition in the Concordance chart.
One effect of this application that comes immediately to mind is
that there are now two Sabian Symbols that apply to Mercury.
The combination is doubly interesting since both those degrees have
to do with issues that correspond to aspects of Mercury’s intellectual
functions:
Aside from the intellectual quality of both Sabian degrees they also imply an awareness of working with Nature and the structure of things. These are qualities that are in perfect resonance with the Harmonic Concordance Ideal. Mercury As Chart RulerAs
has been stated elsewhere, the Concordance Moment happens simultaneously
the world over. Thus, each
location experiences it with its own “personal” Ascendant.
However, in looking for a chart location that would be appropriate to display as
the planetary profile of this specific “Polaroid moment,” I
found two choices that seemed to make sense.
One was the "discovery" chart's location in Middle
Island, NY. Setting the time
at that location for the moment of the eclipse, the chart yields the November
8th date, has Cancer rising, and thus is under the rulership of the
Moon, with Mercury in the 5th house. The
other choice, and my own preference, is that of Greenwich, England, the
location at which the Earth's "official" day starts. For this chart, the date is November 9th and it has
Virgo rising with Mercury in the 3rd house, its primary
domicile, where it is at its greatest strength.
This gives us a "world day" chart ruled by Mercury (it is
as well the first house almuten), another indicator of the Wingéd One’s
prominent role in the Concordance.
Finally,
looking at Mercury’s position vis-à-vis its retrogrades for the year,
we find that it is clear of the influence of both the August 28th
and the December 17th retrogrades and their shadow periods as
well. In other words, it is
unencumbered by any possible retrograde effect and thus functions in its
most intensely (Scorpio) intellectual state. A Unique UranusIn modern astrology, Uranus has come to be associated with astrology and astrologers. It too has a highly distinguished position in its exact placement in the Concordance chart. The ultra heightened power of its "signal" comes from the fact that it makes a direct station on Concordance morning! It is at its final Stationary Direct position at the end of its unusually long,[7] 8 year, 7 month sojourn in Aquarius, the sign which it rules, and the sign which governs astrology. Additionally, during a typical sign passage, Uranus will be retrograde 6 or 7 times. With this transit through Aquarius, however, there is an anomalous 8th retrograde period, and therefore an extra Direct Station. The Concordance Uranus Station at 28° 54’ follows its 8th retrograde during this Aquarian passage. This is arguably the most powerful single day in the entire 84 year cycle of Uranus.8 The Sabian Symbol for 29° Aquarius is "A butterfly emerging from a chrysalis." Dane Rudhyer's keynote states, "The capacity to utterly transform the character of one's consciousness by radically altering the structural patterns of every day living and the types of relationships one enters upon.” He goes on to say that “The Keyword is METAMORPHOSIS. In spiritual terms, this implies “Initiation," i.e. entering a higher realm of conscious existence, and there joining a sacred Company.”9 The Dynamic DuoSo, now we have seen that Mercury and Uranus individually occupy degrees of appropriate intensity and power, we can look at them collectively, first by the synastry between them via their connective aspect, and secondly by their composite, or midpoint, planetary picture. The most prominent feature of this paring, especially in light of the major aspects which comprise the prominent pattern of the Concordance mandala, is that these two receive only one major aspect each, and that from each other. In other words, it is very much like the pair have only themselves with whom to communicate. It seems that there is no mistake here, for Uranus is commonly known as the higher octave planet of Mercury, and so stands as an apt partner for their sole communication. While Mercury has traditionally represented the astrologer, it speaks of communication, analysis, perceptual understanding and the expressive, creative flow of ideation, in the mundane sphere. Uranus represents those same functions on the higher mind levels. That is to say, as “octave planets,” that Mercury operates on the personal, physical and third dimensional plane while Uranus operates on a more universal, metaphysical, and higher dimensional level in matters of social and intellectual exchange. Mike Wirth has noted that the applying, and thus relatively powerful square forming from Mercury to Uranus, implies a dynamic, “willful” relationship that is related to the idea of creatively seeking a higher, more harmonious “…integration and evolution of oneself and one’s relationships through willingness, awareness and choice.”10 Robert Pelletier’s classic, Planets in Aspect, describes the Mercury/Uranus square as eccentric in thinking, with opinions that are usually at odds with prevailing beliefs, a vast intellectual talent, and an inability to compromise,11 qualities of mind that are every bit appropriate for the Concordance circumstances. And Stephanie Jean Clement suggests that Mercury in hard aspect to Uranus has “…the capacity for telepathic communication… [that] facilitates the flow of information…from the larger universe.”12 In other words, Uranus, through its Higher Mind function and from its strongest possible position in the entire Zodiac, transmits, in the astrological language with which they are both familiar, a spiritual message of transformation and metamorphosis from the larger universe to its fellow astrologer, Mercury, which in turn from its third house position, and from the exalted position of the chart’s ruler, reinterprets and broadcasts that message. To those who are open to it, the wisdom in the occult, Scorpionic principles of the Concordance sets in motion a swift and harmonic adjustment to the new and uncharted territory of the enlightened planet Earth. The Point of Willful AttunementAs we have seen, Mercury and Uranus are naturally in attunement because of their octave relationship. The square aspect between them, therefore, can be seen as dynamic, moving the pair towards a willful integration of their respective and complimentary functions. Considering that impulse, Wirth asserts that the midpoint between the two can be prosaically spoken of as the “Point of Willful Attunement.” Where that midpoint falls in the Concordance chart is also revealing. Like any other pair of planets, Mercury/Uranus has two midpoints, “near” and “far.” The near midpoint for this dynamic duo stands at 11 Capricorn 56, within orb of a conjunction to Chiron, the third astrological factor in this mix. Of course that makes the “far” midpoint conjunct to the Concordance Saturn, an interesting confluence of energies. The ancient Greek mythmakers endowed the half-god, half-mortal Chiron with multi-dimensional talents. This bastard son of Saturn and the nymph Philyra, disavowed by his father and rejected at birth by his mother, became the teacher of Gods and mortals alike and was their source of information about nature, naturopathic medicines, alternative healing methodologies and astrology. Barbara Hand Clow suggests that it was Chiron’s astronomical sighting in 1977 that heralded the return of astrology as a great science.13 Showing, by sign and house location, how mundane and personal experience (represented by the Moon through Saturn,) intersect with the spiritual reality beyond the realm of physicality (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), Chiron thus fills a very logical role as the Bridge between the two realms. No small task for a tiny planetoid. But, up to it he is, Yoda might say. I suggest that the Mercury/Uranus midpoint and the Chiron/Saturn opposition show the way to the resolution, in this moment of harmonic concordance, of the unfulfilled Father/Son relationship that they never shared. Taken as a subtext, the Mercury/Uranus connection in the Concordance chart strongly supports the Grand Sextiles’ overlay, both in complexity and attitude. And this is as it should be for a Moment that speaks about an emergent new consciousness. Taken in isolation, perhaps each of these observations is a mere curiosity. Taken together, however, they demand attention. Surely an unimpeded mental, intellectual and communicative capacity would be characteristic of such a breakthrough in Awareness. [1]
